My goal is to expand humanity into space. This goal has been a driving force behind many of my endeavors, and is one of the reasons I founded DevelopSpace. I believe that we can help catalyze the technical developments necessary to make the outwards expansion of our species happen. I am currently an engineer at [http://www.spacex.com SpaceX] in Los Angeles, California, where I primarily work on the Dragon spacecraft to send cargo and humans into space. Prior to that I was a Research Scientist in the Department of Aeronautics and Astronautics at MIT, where I was involved in a number of things including developing system architectures for human Moon and Mars exploration in support of NASA&amp;#039;s Vision for Space Exploration and managing the Mars Gravity Biosatellite, a mission to study the effects of Mars-level gravity on mammals (which involved sending a group of mice into space). During my time at MIT, I also managed to pick-up Bachelors and Masters degrees in Aerospace Engineering.&lt;br /&gt;

The following observations were made prior to and during the formulation of the DevelopSpace concept; taken together, these observations provide motivation for the creation of DevelopSpace.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
# There exist a number of technical, financial, and political barriers to human expansion into space. &lt;br /&gt;
# New and more fully developed technologies, systems, and tools will be of assistance in breaking down the technical barriers to the growing human exploration and settlement of space. &lt;br /&gt;
# Human expansion into space captivates a large number of people around the world, although many of them are not at present actively involved in making it happen. &lt;br /&gt;
# Many people around the world have skills relevant to advancing the human exploration and development of space, including a great many who are not currently involved in doing so. &lt;br /&gt;
# Significant activity is already underway around the world in government, academia, industry, and the non-profit sector towards advancing the human exploration and development of space, although frequently much work is duplicated or lacks adequate focus to make a true contribution. &lt;br /&gt;
# Information technologies are advancing rapidly and can enable space development-related collaboration and the sharing of models, tools, methods, results, designs, and other knowledge. Doing so will enable an individual or group to build upon earlier work more directly and will provide greater focus as to what work is worth engaging in. &lt;br /&gt;
# Having an opportunity to make a meaningful contribution towards space exploration and development provides an inspiration and incentive for individuals to learn the math, science, and engineering skills involved in so doing. &lt;br /&gt;
# Having a chance to be actively involved in space exploration and settlement activities makes one a greater supporter of such endeavors. &lt;br /&gt;
# Having a common, open source resource-base on which to draw will allow government, industry, and academia to focus on the truly innovative aspects of their endeavors, rather than having to recreate existing capabilities.&lt;br /&gt;

My goal is to expand humanity into space. This goal has been a driving force behind many of my endeavors, and is one of the reasons I founded DevelopSpace. I believe that we can help catalyze the technical developments necessary to make the outwards expansion of our species happen. I am currently an engineer at [http://www.spacex.com SpaceX] in Los Angeles, California, where I primarily work on the Dragon spacecraft to send cargo and humans into space. Prior to that I was a Research Scientist in the Department of Aeronautics and Astronautics at MIT, where I was involved in a number of things including developing system architectures for human Moon and Mars exploration in support of NASA&amp;#039;s Vision for Space Exploration and managing the [http://www.marsgravity.org Mars Gravity Biosatellite], a mission to study the effects of Mars-level gravity on mammals (which involved sending a group of mice into space). The open source paradigm has caused major shifts in the way that software is developed, tested, used, maintained, and enhanced. A significant fraction of the infrastructure underpinning the Internet is based upon open source software, and a number of major commercial open source software projects exist for creating a wide variety of professional software applications. As just one example, SourceForge.net, a major open source software portal has over 1.5 million registered users and close to 150,000 projects. The open source concepts fostered in the software realm are also now transitioning to a variety of other fields. One example is Wikipedia, a free encyclopedia, which features user generated content under a free/open source license; Wikipedia has grown to include millions of articles in over a hundred languages. Another example is MIT’s OpenCourseWare initiative which aims to put all of the educational materials from MIT&amp;#039;s undergraduate- and graduate-level courses online, free and openly available to anyone, anywhere.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
With the open source paradigm gaining traction in a variety of fields, the question arises as to in what ways open source concepts can be applied towards space endeavors. This paper both examines the potential for applying open source towards human space activities and highlights space-related areas where open source concepts are already being applied. We find that open source holds much promise for benefiting space endeavors. Open source can clearly be applied in the space software arena, including in modeling and design tools, ground software, and flight software.  This paradigm can also be applied beyond the software arena, in areas such as entire system designs, reference data, system verification/validation procedures and results, and relevant education and training materials. &lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
This paper includes a number of observations related to the potential for applying open source concepts towards human space activities, including:&lt;br /&gt;
# There exist a number of technical, financial, and political barriers to human expansion into space. &lt;br /&gt;
# New and more fully developed technologies, systems, and tools will be of assistance in breaking down the technical barriers to the growing human exploration and settlement of space. &lt;br /&gt;
# Human expansion into space captivates a large number of people around the world, although many of them are not at present actively involved in making it happen. &lt;br /&gt;
# Many people around the world have skills relevant to advancing the human exploration and development of space, including a great many who are not currently involved in doing so. &lt;br /&gt;
# Significant activity is already underway around the world in government, academia, industry, and the non-profit sector towards advancing the human exploration and development of space, although frequently much work is duplicated or lacks adequate focus to make a true contribution. &lt;br /&gt;
# Information technologies are advancing rapidly and can enable space development-related collaboration and the sharing of models, tools, methods, results, designs, and other knowledge. Doing so will enable an individual or group to build upon earlier work more directly and will provide greater focus as to what work is worth engaging in. &lt;br /&gt;
# Having an opportunity to make a meaningful contribution towards space exploration and development provides an inspiration and incentive for individuals to learn the math, science, and engineering skills involved in so doing. &lt;br /&gt;

The open source approach to software development has radically changed the&lt;br /&gt;
way in which many software applications have been created and improved over&lt;br /&gt;
time. This paper examines both the current state and the potential future &lt;br /&gt;
directions for free and open source software in the space realm, with a&lt;br /&gt;
particular emphasis towards developers of small satellites. The significant&lt;br /&gt;
benefits of open source software for small satellites are described, &lt;br /&gt;
including how it can increase reliability, decrease cost, and increase&lt;br /&gt;
flexibility as compared to closed source software or software developed&lt;br /&gt;
exclusively in-house. Software currently under development by the open &lt;br /&gt;
source space software community is examined, including software released&lt;br /&gt;
under the NASA Open Source Agreement (NOSA). The potential for increasing&lt;br /&gt;
the openness of small satellite flight software is described and discussion &lt;br /&gt;

OpenCourseWare initiative which aims to put all of the educational materials from MIT&amp;#039;s&lt;br /&gt;
undergraduate- and graduate-level courses online, free and openly available to anyone,&lt;br /&gt;
anywhere.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
With the open source paradigm gaining traction in a variety of fields, the question arises&lt;br /&gt;
as to in what ways open source concepts can be applied towards space endeavors. This&lt;br /&gt;
paper both examines the potential for applying open source towards human space&lt;br /&gt;
activities and highlights space-related areas where open source concepts are already&lt;br /&gt;
being applied. We find that open source holds much promise for benefiting space&lt;br /&gt;
endeavors. Open source can clearly be applied in the space software arena, including in&lt;br /&gt;
modeling and design tools, ground software, and flight software. This paradigm can also&lt;br /&gt;
be applied beyond the software arena, in areas such as entire system designs, reference&lt;br /&gt;
data, system verification/validation procedures and results, and relevant education and&lt;br /&gt;
training materials.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
This paper includes a number of observations related to the potential for applying open&lt;br /&gt;
source concepts towards human space activities, including:&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
1) There exist a number of technical, financial, and political barriers to human expansion&lt;br /&gt;
into space.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
2) New and more fully developed technologies, systems, and tools will be of assistance in&lt;br /&gt;
breaking down the technical barriers to the growing human exploration and settlement of&lt;br /&gt;
space.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
3) Human expansion into space captivates a large number of people around the world,&lt;br /&gt;
although many of them are not at present actively involved in making it happen.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
4) Many people around the world have skills relevant to advancing the human&lt;br /&gt;
exploration and development of space, including a great many who are not currently&lt;br /&gt;
involved in doing so.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
5) Significant activity is already underway around the world in government, academia,&lt;br /&gt;
industry, and the non-profit sector towards advancing the human exploration and&lt;br /&gt;
development of space, although frequently much work is duplicated or lacks adequate&lt;br /&gt;
focus to make a true contribution.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
6) Information technologies are advancing rapidly and can enable space developmentrelated&lt;br /&gt;
collaboration and the sharing of models, tools, methods, results, designs, and&lt;br /&gt;
other knowledge. Doing so will enable an individual or group to build upon earlier work&lt;br /&gt;
more directly and will provide greater focus as to what work is worth engaging in.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
7) Having an opportunity to make a meaningful contribution towards space exploration&lt;br /&gt;
and development provides an inspiration and incentive for individuals to learn the math,&lt;br /&gt;
science, and engineering skills involved in so doing.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
8) Having a chance to be actively involved in space exploration and settlement activities&lt;br /&gt;
makes one a greater supporter of such endeavors.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
9) Having a common, open source resource-base on which to draw will allow&lt;br /&gt;
government, industry, and academia to focus on the truly innovative aspects of their&lt;br /&gt;
endeavors, rather than having to recreate existing capabilities.&lt;/div&gt;</summary>

At temperatures below 10C, phase 3 dominates, while phase 5 dominates at higher temperatures. Depending on the raw materials available, a variety of options are available for producing the reactive magnesium oxide. With brucite and magnesite, direct calcination (thermal decomposition) will work. Using magnesium chloride, some form of hydrolysis is needed to convert it to magnesium oxide.&lt;br /&gt;

Using brucite, heating to 300C will produce reactive magnesium oxide with water as a by-product. This can be accomplished by a simple solar concentrator or eklectric heating, depending on power generating options available. This temperature is low enough that waste heat could be used from other processes.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
With magnesite as a raw material, heating to around 600C will produce magnesium oxide with carbon dioxide as a by-product. This requires much greater energy input than with brucite, and the higher temperature precludes the use of most waste heat. Using brucite or magnesite would require finding high grade deposits, as well as a great deal of quarrying and preprocessing.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
Magnesium oxide can also be produced from magnesium chloride through some variation of the Aman process, in which brine is fed into a spray roaster and hydrolyzed to magnesium oxide at around 600C. The energy input is much greater than the two previous processes due to heating a great deal of water, but logistically it would be much simpler. It requires only one raw material for both major components of the cement, and handling of the raw materials could potentially be much simpler.&lt;br /&gt;

If large quantities of alkali salts are found, the magnesium hydroxide could be precipitated out of a magnesium chloride solution and calcined with a fairly low energy input as described previously. Adding an alkali salt raises the pH of the solution, causing hydroxide ions to bind with magnesium ions to form insoluble magnesium hydroxide.&lt;/div&gt;</summary>

It is difficult to know a priori what the DevelopSpace system will be used for and how it will be used. Many possible applications exist, each with some unique aspects to how the system would be developed if it were focused on that particular application. As such, is there a way to create the DevelopSpace system such that it can be flexible and useful across a wide range of applications, some of them currently not even envisioned? In other words, can the system be created to enable a base level of functionality while also allowing additional new functionality to emerge over time?&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
One of the difficulties in achieving this goal will be in providing sufficient functionality to achieve these varying objectives, without providing so generic a set of tools that using them is very cumbersome or people do not find the site to be useful beyond already existing entities. At the same time however, some benefit can be derived simply through having a single portal for a community to gather around and focus their minds towards a particular objective. Along such lines, however, content of sufficient quantity, quality, and dynamism must exist for a community to actually coalesce. &lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
A number of online communities already exist in the space realm, and they may offer some indication of potential models for development. My impression of many of these communities, however, is that they tend to be focused more on discussion than on action, and as such may not entirely suited to the intent of creating a community that takes action in the technical realm towards developing space.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
From an organizational stand-point, it is probably worth investigating how other online development communities organize themselves and how the members in such organizations proceed through various levels of responsibility and authority. Some organizations that come to mind as potential models include SlashDot, Wikipedia, Apache Software Foundation, Linux, SourceForge, and the Free Software Foundation. Some of these may be appropriate for this endeavor, others may not. Many additional examples likely exist as well that are worthy of analysis. &lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;

&lt;br /&gt;
Just spoke with Wilfried very briefly about the concept of enabling distributed groups of people to contribute to space exploration. The question he asked, which is quite reasonable, was “What would they do, and how would it be different from what NASA could do?” Part of the question was if they would just come up with ideas, or if they would do something different.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
In order to be effective, it would be important that they not simply “come up with ideas”, but instead make a meaningful contribution that will make it easier and less expensive to do things in the future. It’s important to not simply be a group that talks about things, but a group that does things. That being said, the question still exists as to what is a meaningful contribution.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
One of the biggest difficulties is in the degree of subjectivity which pervades space exploration system design work. One person’s reasonable estimate is overly optimistic to a different person and overly conservative to yet another. Data can be used to validate estimates, however unfortunately there is frequently a lack of relevant data and extrapolations are required.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
A possible avenue to address this is through careful, detailed, and well documented analysis of specific topics that both cover a wide space of options and present detail sensitivities to relevant parameters. As parameters become better understood, the results of the analysis within the range of parameters can then be applied to the engineering design.  It is important, however, that this analysis be based upon basic principles, accepted safety factors, and be carried out with rigor, such that the results can be trusted in future work. Lacking the appropriate background, it is very easy for an argument to emerge along the lines of “I think that number should be XXX” and “No, I think that number should be YYY”, without any rational means of resolving the conflict.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
It should be possible to create tools to structure analyses such that both documentation and sensitivity evaluation become easier. Strict documentation of every parameter along with specification of a range for sensitivity of that parameter could be required. The system could then iteratively investigate the parameter space to represent the sensitivities. The difficulty with this, though, would that the system may tend to constrain the capabilities of experienced engineers who can more intuitively address the questions at hand and quickly narrow the space of options. In addition, a new need to analyze and represent a much larger dataset would result.&lt;br /&gt;

If this approach were undertaken, a form of continuous peer review and parameter linking could be possible.&lt;/div&gt;</summary>

This paper examines ways in which the “open source” concept, which emerged from the software world and is currently being applied in a variety of endeavors, can be used to advance human space activities. In general, open source (in this context) is defined as an approach in which the technical information required to solve a particular problem or provide a particular service or capability (typically source code in the context of open source software) is openly shared under a license which allows for use, modification, and redistribution of the relevant information without royalties. Space projects face a wide variety of technical challenges which must be overcome in order to successfully achieve their objectives. While specific technical challenges are in some cases unique to an individual project, in many cases the majority of challenges represent obstacles that have been overcome in previous projects, although frequently the solutions to these challenges are not widely available. As such, identical work must frequently be repeated across space endeavors, increasing both the cost and risk (both developmental and operational) of such activities. By instead providing the information required to overcome the technical obstacles inherent in all space activities in an open source manner, the technical foundations for human space activities can be incrementally increased over time more effectively, and with significantly decreased need for duplication of effort. New space activities can be initiated more quickly and for lower cost and risk than under traditional space development paradigms. Opportunities for international collaboration and the inclusion of contributions from individuals around the world in space activities are also greatly increased under this model, thereby greatly enlarging the intellectual resource base for the advancement and development of human space endeavors.&lt;/div&gt;</summary>

== Introduction and Motivation ==&lt;br /&gt;
This paper presents design concepts for interplanetary transfer vehicles that could be used to carry out deep space missions envisioned by the “Flexible Path” scenario described in the final report of the Augustine Commission [1]. These include missions to lunar orbit, libration points, Geostationary Orbit (GEO), Near Earth Objects (NEOs), as well as a lunar flyby. The focus of the analysis presented here is on interplanetary transfer vehicle concepts which can be realized in the near-term, i.e. by the end of the 2010s or the beginning of the 2020s. The selection of preferred interplanetary transfer vehicle designs is based on a comprehensive integrated performance analysis of mission types and propulsive capabilities.&lt;br /&gt;

== Ground Rules and Assumptions ==&lt;br /&gt;
The following mission types for interplanetary transfer vehicles are considered: a lunar flyby, a low lunar orbit mission, a mission to GEO, a mission to a Sun-Earth libration point (such as SE-L2), and a mission to a NEO (see FIgure 1). All of these mission types can be carried out with mission durations that lie within the US experience of microgravity exposure, yet offer significant benefits with regard to advancing experience with deep-space human spaceflight operations as well as provide relevant science opportunities [2] [1].&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
3 options for shuttle-derived heavy-lift launch vehicles were considered (see Figure 2): a side-mount vehicle with two 4-segment solid rocket boosters and 3 Space Shuttle Main Engines (SSMEs), an inline vehicle with two 4-segment solid rocket boosters and 3 SSMEs, as well as an inline vehicle with two 5-segment solid rocket boosters and 4 SSMEs; all based on conceptual designs by NASA [3][4]. Vehicles with upper stages based on the RL-10 engine or J-2X engine were not considered because their availability by the end of the 2010s or beginning of the 2020s would be less likely [1].&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
For in-space propulsion, the upper stage of the Delta IV Heavy EELV and the Centaur V1 upper stage of the Atlas V EELV were considered [5] [6]; furthermore, it was assumed that the Crew Exploration Vehicle (CEV) with its crew module and service module (propulsive module) [7] would be available. For additional pressurized / habitable volume, it was assumed that a crew compartment similar to the lunar lander ascent stage compartment [4] would be available. &lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
== Mission Payloads ==&lt;br /&gt;
Figure 3 provides an overview of the payloads associated with the different mission types outlined above. For the short-duration lunar flyby and lunar orbit missions, the CEV itself provides sufficient pressurized volume for 4 people; for the longer-duration GEO, SE-L2, and NEO missions it is assumed that the additional crew compartment would be utilized. Additional payloads are tailored to the specific mission types.&lt;br /&gt;

== Integrated Performance Analysis ==&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
In order to assess the compatibility of launch vehicle, in-space propulsion, and mission payload choices, an integrated performance analysis of in-space propulsion options (differentiated by the number of Delta IH Heavy or Centaur V1 upper stages) was carried out over a range of possible payloads. The results are shown in Figure 4 and Figure 5; payload masses for different mission types as well as LEO-launch mass limits for different launch vehicle choices are highlighted.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
== Preferred Interplanetary Transfer Vehicle Designs ==&lt;br /&gt;
For each launch vehicle option, preferred interplanetary transfer vehicle designs were selected (see Figure 6):&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
* For the 4-segment SRB, 3 SSME side-mount and in-line vehicles, using a two-launch architecture with two sequentially mounted Centaur V1 upper stages and the additional crew compartment and science payload on the first launch, and two sequentially mounted Centaur V1 upper stages and the CEV on the second launch is the preferred configuration. The vehicle and spacecraft for the second launch (two sequentially mounted Centaur V1 upper stages and the CEV) can be utilized alone to carry out lunar flyby and orbit missions.&lt;br /&gt;
* For the 5-segment SRB, 4 SSME in-line vehicle, using a two-launch architecture with two sequentially mounted Delta IV Heavy upper stages on the first launch, and one Delta IV Heavy upper stage, the additional crew compartment and science payload and the CEV on the second launch is the preferred configuration. The vehicle and spacecraft for the second launch without the extra crew compartment can be utilized alone to carry out lunar flyby and orbit missions.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
== Conclusions and Further Work ==&lt;br /&gt;
From the above analyses, a number of findings can be derived:&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
* Significant exploration beyond LEO is possible based on a shuttle-derived heavy-lift launch vehicle with a LEO net payload capability of more than 70 mt, the CEV, adapted EELC upper stages, and an additional pressurized crew compartment (for longer-duration missions).&lt;br /&gt;
* The missions enabled by the above elements can provide significant operational experience beyond LEO, provide insight into the effects of the interplanetary radiation environment on humans, and result in sample return from Near Earth Objects.&lt;br /&gt;
* These missions require no more than 1-2 launches of the heavy-lift launch vehicle; assuming that the heavy-lift launch vehicle can be launched 4-6 times per year (supported by the record of shuttle launches), 2-3 such 2-launch missions could be carried out each year.&lt;br /&gt;
* The integrated performance analysis suggests that more ambitious deep space mission such as Mars flyby missions may be possible given a two-launch architecture using one of the above launch vehicles. &lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
A number of recommendations for future work could also be derived:&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
* While the above missions are of particular relevance to the Flexible Path scenario, these missions are relevant as initial exploration missions to whatever scenario is chosen for NASA’s future human spaceflight strategy.&lt;br /&gt;
* The preferred interplanetary transfer vehicle concepts should be subjected to more detailed design analysis.&lt;br /&gt;
* The application of 2-launch architectures to more ambitious deep space missions such as Mars flyby missions should be investigated.&lt;br /&gt;
* The analysis should be extended to include other currently available in-space propulsion and habitation assets. &lt;br /&gt;

# New and more fully developed technologies, systems, and tools will be of assistance in breaking down the technical barriers to the growing human exploration and settlement of space. &lt;br /&gt;
# Human expansion into space captivates a large number of people around the world, although many of them are not at present actively involved in making it happen. &lt;br /&gt;
# Many people around the world have skills relevant to advancing the human exploration and development of space, including a great many who are not currently involved in doing so. &lt;br /&gt;
# Significant activity is already underway around the world in government, academia, industry, and the non-profit sector towards advancing the human exploration and development of space, although frequently much work is duplicated or lacks adequate focus to make a true contribution. &lt;br /&gt;
# Information technologies are advancing rapidly and can enable space development-related collaboration and the sharing of models, tools, methods, results, designs, and other knowledge. # Human expansion into space captivates a large number of people around the world, although many of them are not at present actively involved in making it happen. &lt;br /&gt;

Lemnos Labs, focused on hardware development start-ups, believes that advances in rapid prototyping have paved the way for a new generation of hardware startups by reducing the time and resources required to bring a product to market. They aim to lead this charge by accelerating breakthrough technologies that solve real-world problems. Prior to founding Lemnos Labs Mr. Conrad was an active duty United States Air Force officer.
