Mr. Stakem was the Principal Investigator for the NASA-funded FlightLinux Project.

He is an affiliate faculty member at Loyola University in Maryland, the Graduate Computer Science Program. He also teaches at the Whiting School, Johns Hopkins University, Graduate Program in Engineering.

Mr. Stakem is a member of the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics, and the Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers.

His interests include open source projects in space and robotics. During 2010, he served as a Mentor to the Robotics Boot Camp Program at GSFC.
